Court Martial - Sangeeth Sivan, director Ek - The Power of One

Ek - The Power of One starring Nana Patekar and Bobby Deol has released and had left it’s director Sangeeth Sivan surprised. Reason? He isn’t able to comprehend the backlash coming the way of his film when the fact is that it is a remake of a super successful Telugu film Atahdu [starring Mahesh Babu in the lead] which brought in masses by thousands in theaters when released four years back. Though thousands may not have thronged his Ek - The Power of One, Sangeeth is still delighted to see a reasonably good response for this action flick which has been released after a delay of two years.

Charge 1 - Do we have audience for such cinema today?

‘I miss those life-changing lyrics!’ - A R Rahman

He has proved that music may have languages but not boundaries. Here’s the reticent A.R.Rahman, who has left no award unturned in the last six months, in a midnight chat from Chennai that brims with rare candour

For two years in succession, you have clinched both the Best Music and Best Background Music Screen trophies. What do you have to say about this unique achievement?
I always feel that nothing can be planned, and sometimes things just fall into place! Just a few years ago, a lot of things seemed to be going off-track. Mani Ratnam’s Lajjo, Shyam Benegal’s Chamki and Krishna Shah’s Baiju and one or two other musicals were wonderful subjects that inspired me then - and none of them even took off! On the other hand, Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na that got me your Best Music trophy this year was almost shelved - till Aamir Khan took over its production. Last year, a lot of my films came all together - Jaane Tu…, Jodhaa Akbar, Yuvvraaj, the music of Ada, Ghajini and then Slumdog Millionaire.
So I have stopped expecting anything in life. If good things happen, it’s okay, but if they don’t, at least you are not frustrated! (Laughs).

In Kaminey, Priyanka and Shahid go for a makeover

Click above for more movie stills

Looks do matter. Especially when the female in question is Priyanka Chopra. She was a stunner in her last two successful outings at the box office - Dostana and Fashion. If in the former she was the editor of a fashion magazine, in the latter she was a show- stopper herself.

Of course, all shows stopped at her arrival but she decided to take a different route altogether in her films to follow. She decided to be choosy about her work and picked on only two projects, Kaminey and What’s Your Rashee. What makes Kaminey special is the fact that she got to work with director Vishal Bhardwaj, a master story teller when it comes to real cinema, and known for giving his leading ladies an entirely different look.

PREDICTIONS FOR RAJASTHAN ROYALS

As the Indian Premiere League’s second season is about to begin, noted astro-numerologist Bhavikk Sangghvi predicts what is in store for the IPL season one winner and its key players and of course it’s new owner Shilpa Shetty.

RAJASTHAN ROYALS: As a name ‘Rajasthan Royals’ adds up to No.40 (4). Considered not be an auspicious number in numerology but can definitely be the most unconventional & unpredictable number. Who expected RR to win the first ever IPL series? I am sure even they didn’t. (But I can proudly say that I had predicted their win a week ago in press / radio before the finals took place) Amongst the lowest bidding team of last year, they slowly & steadily made progress & came to winners to everyone’s surprise. This year also, I am quite hopeful that the team would not disappointment their fans as luck seems to be in their favour once again. The year 2009 is favourable for most people or names connected with numbers 1, 2, 4 or 7. RR fits the bill perfectly.

SRK takes on cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar

Shah Rukh Khan at the Nokia - Kolkata Knight Riders tie up press conference held at Grand Hyatt, Santacruz, Mumbai on Sunday April 5th evening took on Sunil Gavaskar head on. The cricketing legend Gavaskar had criticised KKR coach John Buchanan over their team strategies including the possibility of multiple captains for the team.

When asked about his reaction over Gavaskar’s comments in his column in Hindustan Times about KKR, the King Khan his typical sarcastic style replied, “I have tremendous respect for Mr. Sunil Gavaskar. He was a great player of his times.  But T20 is a new type of game. Since he hasn’t ever played this game he has no right to comment on it. If he is still so interested then he should buy an IPL team for himself and implement his game tactics. We know what is good for us and good for cricket.”

Mithun Chakraborty wore the same costume day after day

‘Zor Lagaa ke…. Haiya’ is one film that Mithun Chakraborty will not forget in a hurry. Playing the role of a vagabond, in this family entertainer, Mithun Chakraborty wore the same costume day after day and that too, without washing it. Since he plays a beggar, not washing the clothes made them still dirtier which the costume look more authentic.

The producer Kartikeya Talreja says, “though Mithunda loved his role of a homeless vagabond man, one of the main requirements for this character is that he has to look very dirty. Obviously as a homeless beggar, he has no money to take bath daily or go to a barber shop. Hence Mithunda has a long unkempt hair and long beard with only one set of costume throughout the film. It used to irritate him but he was very supportive throughout the film.”
