‘I miss those life-changing lyrics!’ - A R Rahman

He has proved that music may have languages but not boundaries. Here’s the reticent A.R.Rahman, who has left no award unturned in the last six months, in a midnight chat from Chennai that brims with rare candour

For two years in succession, you have clinched both the Best Music and Best Background Music Screen trophies. What do you have to say about this unique achievement?
I always feel that nothing can be planned, and sometimes things just fall into place! Just a few years ago, a lot of things seemed to be going off-track. Mani Ratnam’s Lajjo, Shyam Benegal’s Chamki and Krishna Shah’s Baiju and one or two other musicals were wonderful subjects that inspired me then - and none of them even took off! On the other hand, Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na that got me your Best Music trophy this year was almost shelved - till Aamir Khan took over its production. Last year, a lot of my films came all together - Jaane Tu…, Jodhaa Akbar, Yuvvraaj, the music of Ada, Ghajini and then Slumdog Millionaire.
So I have stopped expecting anything in life. If good things happen, it’s okay, but if they don’t, at least you are not frustrated! (Laughs).

"Salman knelt and proposed to me in front of the Eiffel Tower" - Asin

She’s basking in well-deserved success after Ghajini. In between shooting a song for London Dreams and doing commercials, Asin, looking fresh as a daisy in casual tee and trousers, opens up in an exclusive chat

How is life post-Ghajini? You are flooded with endorsements now.
Life is pretty much the same. As for endorsements, I have been doing ads since the age of 14. So far, I have done around 50 ads including Parachute, BPL Mobile, Mirinda and Colgate. Most of the commercials you are seeing now have been signed much before Ghajini happened.

"Even after a decade, I am considered a newcomer" - Madhavan

Madhavan has been around for close to a decade and has been slowly but steadily making his presence felt in Bollywood. However, one question that he continues to answer is around his presence in solo lead films. Not that he minds answering that because he believes that even after a decade, he is still considered a newcomer.

Release of 13B has made at least one man really happy - Madhavan. While the film has been a super hit in its Tamil version down South, even the Hindi version hasn’t done bad and has turned out to be the highest grosser for a Madhavan solo.

Bollywood’s A-listers boycott election campaigns

After Sanjay Dutt’s humbling ouster from the elections getting A-list stars to campaign for political parties or individual candidates is going to be very tough. They’ve discreetly decided to show their solidarity for Sanju Baba by staying away from campaigning.
A very close friend of the popular actor says on condition of anonymity, “There’s a sense of dismay about Baba’s ouster from the elections. All of us had become political animals for this season because of our support for him. But with him no longer eligible for candidacy, we feel campaigning for others would be morally and ethically wrong. Yaar, dil nahin karta.”
Many A-listers who planned to pitch in their might with the Dutt are now planning impromptu holidays in April with their families or persuading their producers to arrange long schedules far away from the country to beat the simmering summer heat and the discontent of the elections post the Dutt factor.
At least 7 major stars confessed to me on Wednesday morning that they would have happily campaigned for Sanjay Dutt or even for other candidates if Dutt had been in the fray.
“But without him, the spirit of solidarity has vanished .Why should we campaign for anyone when Baba is out?” says a colleague and co-star of Dutt.
Madhur Bhandarkar echoes the rest of the industry’s feeling of dejection on Dutt’s ouster. “I’m out of Mumbai in Karjat for the whole of April shooting. Would I campaign for someone now? Doubtful. Unless it’s someone I believe can take the country forward. And at the moment I don’t see anyone whom I believe in.”
Govinda has offered to campaign for his Congress colleagues. But in the same breath he says, “My services are optional. My heart has to say the candidate is right. What happened with Sanju is tragic destiny. We can’t fight it. But we can stop and think about it.”

Irrfan Khan says very clearly that it would take a lot of persuasion for him to campaign for anyone. “I need to be convinced of a candidate’s intentions.”

PREDICTIONS FOR RAJASTHAN ROYALS

As the Indian Premiere League’s second season is about to begin, noted astro-numerologist Bhavikk Sangghvi predicts what is in store for the IPL season one winner and its key players and of course it’s new owner Shilpa Shetty.

RAJASTHAN ROYALS: As a name ‘Rajasthan Royals’ adds up to No.40 (4). Considered not be an auspicious number in numerology but can definitely be the most unconventional & unpredictable number. Who expected RR to win the first ever IPL series? I am sure even they didn’t. (But I can proudly say that I had predicted their win a week ago in press / radio before the finals took place) Amongst the lowest bidding team of last year, they slowly & steadily made progress & came to winners to everyone’s surprise. This year also, I am quite hopeful that the team would not disappointment their fans as luck seems to be in their favour once again. The year 2009 is favourable for most people or names connected with numbers 1, 2, 4 or 7. RR fits the bill perfectly.

Love is in the air…Nandana Sen flies to London to be with beau

Producer Madhu Mantena has planned a very special holiday in London for the love of his life. Late last week he flew into the city to make all the preparations right from reservations in her favourite hotel to arranging for her favourite flowers in her room and shopping expeditions to the shops in London that Nandana likes the best.
This weekend Nandana flew into London from the US. The actress shot a film in New York and then spent time with her father Prof Amartya Sen in Boston before heading to London on Saturday. The holiday with Madhu was not on the cards until he decided to combine business with pleasure.
“I was supposed to be here for the pre-production of my film 1-800-Love. But then I guess love took over work,” Madhu trails off sheepishly.
Madhu has planned Nandana’s favourite activities for the week right down to the minutest detail. No wonder Nandana thinks she has the most faithful and dutiful boyfriend in Bollywood, so much so that Nandana’s Dad too has been urging his daughter to tie the knot.
Confesses Madhu, “Yes, the Professor is fond of me, though I’m from a different state, culture and intellectual bent. I’ve done my Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge on him (remember how Shah Rukh Khan won over Kajol’s dad?). Now if only Nandana would say yes.”
A bigger plan on the anvil is a tailor-made film for Nandana that Madhu wants to produce specially for her. “I saw her in Rang Rasiya. And I was bowled over,” says the proud boyfriend.

Wishing Ajay Devgan a very happy Birthday

Its basic general knowledge that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. But today’s Birthday boy is one ’son’ who will never set; instead he has set many guidelines for others to follow and attain success! We are indeed talking about the one and only Vishal Devgan aka Ajay Devgan, the illustrious son of the ace fight master Veeru Devgan.

Even though he was a ’star-son’, Ajay chose to ‘earn’ his launch in the form of his debut film Phool Aur Kaante, a film that gave Bollywood a superstar for all seasons and all reasons! What followed after this were an array of films like Jigar, Divya Shakti, Platform, Dilwale, Naajayaz, Ishq, Pyaar Tho Hona Hi Tha, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Golmaal to name a few. Ajay Devgan is indeed one of the very few actors in Bollywood today who has (well deservedly) earned his position as a romantic hero as well as an action man!
