Subhash K. Jha speaks about Sorry Bhai

If Sorry Bhai starred Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra and John Abraham, the love triangle would be located in sizzling Brazil.

What we get is the calm blue seas of Mauritius where Sanjay Suri and Sharman Joshi vie for Chitrangda’s attention with a laidback stay-calm stay-cool kind of urbane chic that often masquerades as a mirror of contemporary mores in today’s cinema.

Happily, Sorry Bhai has plenty of genuine moments of emotional ‘ouch’-burst. This isn’t a film about confrontational relationships. The characters prefer to keep it nice and peaceful on the surface, no matter what the turmoil inside….just like the blue oceans and white sands of Mauritius.

Bollywood celebrities comment on the terrorist attacks on Mumbai

26th November 2008. The city that never sleeps has come to a grinding halt. Mumbai sees its darkest night ever. The term ‘terrorism’ or ‘terrorists’ is enough to scare the living day lights out of you but terrorism is a criminal act that religious beliefs or political positions can never justify. The removal of terrorism should be carried out through reasoned judgment in accordance with laws, not by military retaliations or wars. Two and a half years have passed since the July 11 Mumbai train bombings by the terrorists in 2006, where our police and politicians concluded: ‘Mumbai is safe and our security is tightened throughout the city’. The reality, however, is the opposite of this. What has become clear though in the past two and a half years is that our security and intelligence has not only failed to remove terrorism and terrorists but given even more room for such hideous activities. Today these radicals threaten the safety of the Indian people. Like our Independence, securing our freedom now is a long-term struggle but the road to victory will begin and we as Indians won’t back off. Bollywood unites once again and the celebrities turn into citizens of Mumbai only to bring out their support and sympathy towards those unlucky few who have been a prey in what’s considered to be Mumbai’s worst ever terror attack at the Taj and the Trident Oberoi.

Bollywood.tv’s London correspondent Devansh Patel gets you some first hand comments and anger expressed from the stars just hours after the horrifying incident that not only shook the city of Mumbai but the entire world.

The first instance of a double role in Bollywood

Even as double roles get increasingly popular in Bollywood, the first instance dates back by 91 years, way back in 1917. Dadasaheb Phalke’s movie Lanka Dahan saw Anna Salunke playing the first double role. Lanka Dahan was a mythological retelling of the familiar ‘Ramayana’ story of Rama’s wife Sita being abducted by Ravana, the demon king of Lanka, and Rama’s triumph. Anna Salunke played the characters of both Ram and Sita in the film.

In the age of talkies, it was Shahu Modak who followed his footsteps by enacting the role of a prince and a pauper in Master Vithal’s Awara Shahzada in 1933.

The similarity between Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Ghajini

Plain Janes and Simple Simons getting hip and happening are a popular leitmotif in films.

When a staid-looking, simpleton Surinder Sahni (Shah Rukh Khan) working for Punjab Power, meets the flamboyant, vivacious Taani (Anushka Sharma), his world goes topsy turvy. He chucks his black-rimmed glasses and gets his greased hair highlighted. He exchanges his stuffy woollen vests for funky jackets and snazzy jeans. He changes his look, clothes and attitude to woo his lady-love. What effect Shah Rukh’s make-over in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi has on the box-office remains to be seen on December 12 when the film releases. But makeovers have been a popular leitmotif in films.

Not surprising then that if Aamir Khan also sports two diametrically-opposite looks for his upcoming release Ghajini - initially he is the long-tressed romantic and then for the avenging avtaar he goes mean and bald and all full of tattooes.
